Ninety-one years after the first baptisms occurred in nearby Elkmont, Ala., a meetinghouse has been built in Decatur, Ala., to house the Decatur Ward of the Huntsville Alabama Stake.
Some members here can still remember attending Church in Elkmont's one-room building that seated 30 people. The new building in Decatur can seat 250 people. An open house was recently held at the Decatur meetinghouse. Theme for the open house was "I Am A Child Of God." Each auxiliary and quorum set up displays. Also explained in displays were Church programs of interest, such as family preparedness, family home evening, family history, etc. About 35 to 45 non-members attended the open house.
The open house concluded with a fireside attended by about 300 members and non-members. Elder Rex D. Pinegar of the First Quorum of the Seventy and president of the North America Southeast Area spoke at the fireside. Mayor Bill Dukes of Decatur attended and presented Elder Pinegar with a key to the city. Bishop Darrell Smith of the Decatur Ward later gave the mayor a copy of the Book of Mormon.
